The Applied Optics and Image Processing Group is composed by interdisciplinary members from different departments of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) and leaded by researchers from the UPC Optics and Optometry Department.

The GOAPI group develops research lines related to applications in visible optics, extended to near infrared and ultra violet spectral bands. The subjects of these lines are related to: imaging, vision, color and laser processing. It covers a wide variety of applications in the fields of computer vision, automated inspection, image analysis and processing, shapes recognition, visual and optics quality, medical imaging, instrument development and measuring techniques, photometry, colorimetry, digital color, laser irradiated materials processing, laser marking, waveguides, etc.

Experience areas

The experience areas are grouped in five lines:

• Image processing.
  
  Acquisition, analysis, presentation, treatment and opto-digital operations which are used on images for specific applications as: shape recognition, information extraction, image enhancing, defects detection, identification, discrimination and classification, codification and securing information, characterization, etc. Instrument development and measuring techniques.


• Computer vision, automated inspection.
  
  System, devices and environmental lighting to capture and show black and white and color images. Visual and optical quality. Application of human vision models to computer vision.


• Color.
  
  Technology and color management, color cameras, digital color, colorimetry, introduction of color in computer vision. Design and development of applications related to photometry and color.


• Laser systems applications.
  
  Modification of the optical properties of semiconductor and dielectric materials by laser irradiation. Image processing by laser irradiation. Waveguide writing in dielectric materials. Laser marking. Image processing by pico and femtosecond ultra short peak pulses. Nanotechnology. Production of new photonical devices in a three dimensional configuration. Internal micromechanized in dielectric materials.

  Research of transmission modes in near and far field waveguides.
